Early childhood development (ECD) is critical for the long-term physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being of children. The first five years of life are particularly important for the development of essential skills that impact later learning and behavior (Aliyu et al., 2023). Nurses, as key healthcare providers in both hospital and community settings, play a crucial role in promoting early childhood development through education, early interventions, and support for caregivers. In Kaduna State, where socioeconomic and healthcare access disparities exist, nurses' awareness and practices in ECD are pivotal in shaping children's future health and development outcomes.
Despite the recognized importance of early childhood development, there is limited research on the awareness and practices of nurses regarding ECD in Kaduna State. This study aims to assess nurses' knowledge of early childhood development, their involvement in ECD-related activities, and how their practices influence the development of children under their care.
Early childhood development is often overlooked in many healthcare settings due to the focus on treating acute illnesses rather than promoting preventive measures. In Kaduna State, nurses may face barriers such as lack of training, inadequate resources, and limited engagement with caregivers, affecting their ability to advocate for and implement ECD practices. This study aims to explore the level of awareness among nurses in Kaduna State regarding ECD and evaluate their involvement in promoting ECD practices.
The study will focus on nurses working in pediatric and maternal health settings in Kaduna State. Data will be collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Limitations include the variability in practices across different healthcare settings and potential biases in self-reported data.
